A medley of Red Lions

The Red Lion, Duke of York Street

On 11th March Mr Ian White, CAMRA luminary and connoisseur of fine alehouses, once more put together a fun pub crawl for the New Sheridan Club, and some 18 drinkers took part. Often these club pub crawls are themed around certain parts of London, and last time the theme was Wetherspoons pubs threatened with closure. This time the theme was that all the pubs were called The Red Lion. It's interesting that five pubs with the same name could coexist within easy walking distance of each other, but when we visited on a Saturday evening they were all busy (uncomfortably crowded in some cases). In order, the five Red Lions were on Parliament Street, Crown Passage, Duke of York Street, Kingly Street and High Holborn. I myself had only set foot in one of them before, and I was particularly taken by the Gin Palace stylings of the pub on Duke of York Street, with its ornate plasterwork and etched mirrors.

Many thanks to Ian for organising this. You can see more photos from the event in this album on the Club’s Flickr page.
