Club cheered by classic Christmas tale

For our December meeting the Earl of Essex read us the classic P.G. Wodehouse short story "Jeeves and the Yuletide Spirit" (perhaps inspired by the Jeeves and Wooster theme of last year's Christmas party). The story, first published in the Strand magazine in 1927, starts with Bertie cancelling previous plans to spend Christmas in Monte Carlo partly because he is in love with Roberta Wickham. Jeeves disapproves of both of these facts and, needless to say, manages to engineer matters back round to a state more to his liking, due in part Bertie's attempt to play a practical joke on Tuppy Glossop—an enterprise that has unexpected consequences…
