The Candlelight Club’s Valentine’s Ball

  • A secret ballroom Somewhere in south London, England United Kingdom (map)

Admission: £30 in advance
Dress: 1920s elegance

The Candlelight Club is an award-winning clandestine pop-up 1920s speakeasy, in a secret London venue lit by candles. Each event offers live period jazz bands, cabaret, burlesque and vintage vinylism for your dancing pleasure, plus a dining options, cocktails bars and more.

What more romantic way is there to celebrate St Valentine’s Day than an evening of Charleston-dancing, cocktail-sipping and general 1920s glamour? (Well, ask the members of Chicago’s North Side Gang who went down in a hail of bullets from Al Capone’s men in the famous St Valentine’s Day Massacre in 1929 and you might get a different answer, but we’ll gloss over that…)

At our Valentine's Ball live music will come from jazz Cupid Elise Roth and her High Standards, raising the rafters with a hurricane of swing to get your feet moving on the dance floor. Hosting will be the Lord of Cabaret misrule, Champagne Charlie, with a slap, a tickle and a saucy song. There will be heart-stopping burlesque from the luminous Vicky Butterfly, and when the band aren’t playing DJs the Bee’s Knees will be spinning vintage vinyl.

Want to know if he/she is The One? Our fortune teller Lucius will be on hand to advise. There will also be a pop-up vintage jewellery store from Michelle Krausz (in case you need a ring in a hurry) and a sketch artist to capture you in your dreamy finery.

Note that our party is not just for spooning couples—as at all our events, we welcome groups of friends, swing dance fans, vintage dandies, lone wolves and conga-dancing party people.

Our venue will be a historic mansion in south London with its own ballroom. You can come just for drinks and dancing but you can also reserve a table with Champagne, or book the three-course dinner. There’s even an inclusive-drinks option. Ticket-holders receive an email two days before revealing the secret location (which is close to a tube station). So pull on your flapper dress and get ready to Charleston…

"The closest you'll find to an authentic Jazz Age experience in central London. Its unique ambience, fuelled by hundreds of candles, is truly a scene to behold." —Time Out
