Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, the Earl of Essex returns with an unprecedented fourth talk on the same subject, the diaries of Chips Channon. Here’s a taster from Essex of what to expect: "The third and final volume of the unexpurgated diaries of Sir Henry 'Chips' Channon covers the period 1943–57 in which Chips formally has to confirm divorce proceedings from his wife, the Guinness heiress, Lady Honor. These money worries, combined with the ending of his political ambitions as he declines the continued role of PPS to RAB Butler when he moves to Education, leads Chips to fully concentrate on his social life. His relationship with Peter Coats is put on hold as Coats is sent to India and Chips begins a relationship with the playwright, Terence Rattigan, and moves more in theatrical circles. A lifetime of heavy drinking, smoking and misuse of benzedrine takes its toll on Chips, leaving him bedridden in the final year of his life and the diaries end in 1957, before his death in 1958."
As usual we will be attempting to livestream the talk (very much at the mercy of the pub’s wifi connection). The link to watch that is https://youtube.com/live/4ow2w2jb4GY.
